A three-season sunroom that gets a door closed across it in winter has its safe room volume shrink right when you’d want the fireplace running most. And a great room fully open to a kitchen with a strong range hood adds one more variable, since a big exhaust hood on high can pull real negative pressure.

One thing that doesn’t change regardless of budget: clearances, hearth extension requirements, and ventilation guidance aren’t a line item to trim. Every move above works within the real constraints.
Two Homes, Same Month
A young couple in their first home, tight renovation budget, got a modest vent-free unit, stock matte black trim, standard porcelain tile in a simple vertical pattern, and a whole wall painted in deep charcoal that made the black trim disappear and the flame become the only thing that pops. 3. Pull that unit’s manufacturer clearance spec sheet. Mantel height and projection, side clearance, hearth extension depth. This is the step people skip or do backwards, and the single most common source of rework.
4. Confirm gas line capacity and blower electrical needs, and get any wiring roughed in before walls close up.
5. Design the surround architecture around the locked clearance numbers — surround width, mantel height, hearth footprint, TV placement. This should feel like drafting, not dreaming.
6. Choose materials and finish last. Tile, stone, paint color, trim style — the one decision that doesn’t touch a single physical requirement, so it can change right up until the order gets placed.
The Hollister Mantel That Got Ahead of the Clearance Spec
A homeowner over in Hollister found a gorgeous book-matched stone slab and a live-edge walnut mantel she loved, and got the mason lined up before we’d finalized which vent-free unit was going in.
