How Do I Convert My Wood-Burning Fireplace to Gas?

“Can it” and “should it” are genuinely two different questions here, and most people only ever think to ask the first one — and even that one, they usually answer wrong on their own before anyone looks at the chimney. Here’s what actually determines whether, and how, an existing wood-burning fireplace can become a gas one.

What to Assess Before Any Product Conversation

The very first thing I assess, before vented versus vent-free ever comes up: whether the existing flue is actually the right size and condition for gas specifically, not whether it currently works fine for wood. The common assumption runs backwards from what people expect — “my chimney already handles wood fires just fine, so it’ll obviously be fine for gas too.” Gas appliances run at a much lower flue temperature than wood, and as that cooler flue gas travels up an oversized chimney, it loses heat and begins to cool and condense before it reaches outside, the reverse of wood’s problem.

A flue too large for a gas appliance can’t move that water vapor out fast enough, and the trapped moisture condenses into an acidic solution that slowly eats away at the flue lining — spalling, brick or clay tile breaking apart from the inside. The Fireplace That “Already Worked Fine”

A gas insert bypasses the damper’s original function entirely rather than preserving any position — since a liner has to run from the insert’s flue collar up through where the damper sits, it typically gets removed to make room, with a block-off plate installed at the transition. A full direct-vent tear-out makes the old damper irrelevant, not repositioned at all — since this path builds an entirely new, independent sealed vent system, the original chimney and damper typically just get capped off and decommissioned.

An insert sits with a faceplate projecting forward of the original opening, viewed through a fixed glass front rather than an open cavity — the experience shifts from sitting in front of an open hearth to looking through a window at a contained firebox, a genuinely different feeling independent of how realistic the flame looks. A full direct-vent replacement carries that same sealed-glass experience, the furthest departure for someone converting from open masonry.

The common disappointment, even with a flawless install: people miss the depth and openness of the original firebox more than they miss the wood itself. They expect to miss the crackle and the smell, and usually do, but what surprises people more is purely visual and spatial — staring into a deep, dark, open cavity feels different from looking through a pane of glass at a lit box, even when the flame behind that glass looks genuinely good.

A vented gas log set typically runs $1,500–$3,000 all-in for the log set, damper clamp hardware, and gas line hookup, assuming gas is reasonably close and the chimney’s sound. A vent-free gas log set usually runs a modest step down, $1,200–$2,500, since it’s going into existing masonry rather than needing a full surround. A gas insert runs meaningfully higher, typically $4,500–$7,500, since this path genuinely requires liner work plus the insert unit and installation labor. A full direct-vent tear-out and replacement is the highest tier, typically $6,000–$12,000, reflecting real demolition of the old firebox alongside building an entirely new sealed venting system.

Flue condition can swing any of the first three paths significantly higher, independent of which appliance you picked. A camera inspection turning up spalling or deterioration is real remediation cost sitting on top of whichever path you’re on — it doesn’t discriminate between the cheap option and the nice one, because it’s a chimney problem, not a product problem.

When the “Cheap” Option Converged With the “Nice” Option

Step 3: Decide how you feel about a permanently open flue, year-round. Vented logs mean that damper stays clamped open forever. If that bothers you and your room qualifies on the volume math, vent-free avoids it.

Step 4: Let the flue’s actual condition, not its sticker price, tell you the real cost. Price out your preferred path against what Step 1 turned up, not against a generic number from before anyone looked at your chimney.

The myth worth putting to rest: this is always a simple, quick swap. “Just put some gas logs in” sounds like the most minor project on this whole list, but flue sizing and condition, damper handling, and finished appearance all carry real decisions and real risk if skipped. The second myth: gas is automatically the upgrade from wood, in every sense. Gas genuinely wins on convenience and often on heating efficiency, but “upgrade” implies strictly better, and that’s not quite honest — the homeowner who chose vented logs to keep her open firebox wasn’t settling for less. Gas is a different tool with different trade-offs, and which one someone should choose depends entirely on what they’re actually optimizing for.
