What the Four Questions Mean

Where Will It Go?

Indoor and outdoor fireplaces are built differently — Outdoor units are sealed against weather and rated for open air. Starting here rules out a lot straight away.

Gas, Wood, or Electric?

Gas gives you steady warmth at the flip of a switch. Wood gives you real flame and real work, and the best heat per dollar if you have access to firewood. Electric needs no chimney and no gas line, so it installs almost anywhere.

What Kind of Venting?

Direct vent units exhaust through an exterior wall, so no chimney is needed. Vent-free units skip venting entirely, with some room-size and code considerations. B-vent uses an existing vertical flue.

How Do You Want to See the Fire?

Single-sided is the classic look. See-through warms two rooms at once through one shared wall. Corner and multi-sided units create a wraparound view.
